On this trip students will visit two important museums in Bordeaux: the Musée des BeauxArts, whose holdings include portraits by Renaissance and later masters, and the CAPCcollection of contemporary art. Unesco named Bordeaux a World Heritage Site for itsbeautiful architecture and urban planning, but also because of its rich cultural legacy. Thecity’s most famous son, Michel de Montaigne, invented the personal essay as a literary formand even served as mayor from 1581 to 1585. We will visit the château where he did mostof his writing, and take another excursion to a vineyard in the surrounding wine country.Other activities include writing and drawing exercises, which, like our stops at museumsand sites of historical importance, are designed to complement the Firstbridge coursesAutobiographical Writing (where Montaigne’s essays are studied) and Introduction toDrawing (where students learn how to do portraits and self-portraits).
