PO1011 Foundations of Modern Politics
During the Weimar Republic (1918-1933) Germany experienced the backsliding and collapse of its democratic system, giving rise to the authoritarian regime of Nazi Germany鈥檚 Third Reich鈥 (1933-1945). On this trip we will study Germany鈥檚 democratic erosion through the lens of the cultural, economic, and political conditions present in Munich, Bavaria鈥檚 capital as well the initial center of the Nazi movement. We will follow the traces of the city鈥檚 darkest period by visiting sites such as those of the former headquarter of the National Socialist German Workers鈥 Party (NSDAP), the beer halls in which masses were mobilized for Hitler鈥檚 1924 putsch attempt, and the concentration camp in Dachau.
