Scholarly works dealing with early Jewish remembrance of the Holocaust have mainly focused on documentation efforts, historiographical writings, testimonies,听Yisker-books, commemorations, and monuments, among other topics. In such works, the Jewish press has been extensively mobilized by scholars as a privileged source of information on communal initiatives and perspectives.听Indeed, as means for the听circulation of听information on Jewish persecutions since the very moment when thesewere taking place, Jewish journals听have also become important vehicles for听the听spreading听of听knowledge on the Holocaust in the early postwar years. Nonetheless, if the relevance of the Jewish press as a historical source has been widely acknowledged, this media still needs to be approached as a subject of听study in itself, alongside听with听other commemorative endeavors.听

By听transmitting听a great variety of Holocaust writings in the early postwar years, the Jewish press has significantly shaped the understanding of the Jewish past within the communities it was addressed tothrough its听major informative and commemorative role. Moreover, editors and journalists of the Jewish press worldwide very often adopted positions of their own with respect to the meanings of the past expressed in their writings. Hence, this workshop regards Jewish journals as vehicles for early Holocaust memory, and simultaneously as institutional actors with their own memorial agendas.听

Questions听proposed to be addressed by participants in their听papers:听

• What were听the听continuities听or differences听between听the wartime Jewish press (a free one in countries spared by Nazi occupation and a clandestine one in Nazi-occupied Europe)听and听the postwar Jewish press?听

• Which topics related to the Holocaust听have听circulated in the Jewish press?听

• What听kind/genre听of texts were听published?听(Testimonies? Historical听writings?听Fiction? Poetry?News?听Opinion?)听

• What听were the specificities听of听the听treatment of the Holocaust听in听the Jewish press, compared to听books?听

• Which audience did the Jewish press reach听to,听compared to other printed materials?听

• Who wrote听about the Holocaust in the Jewish press?听Was the readership involved in听the elaboration of Holocaust memory?听

• What was the editorial听position听of the journal(s)听under consideration? Were there contesting visions within the same journal?听

• Was there a dialogue听between the听Jewish听press and other听Jewish or non-Jewish听media?听听

• How have听images听printed听in the Jewish press听(pictures, drawings, cartoons)听contributed to听the construction of a听Holocaust听visual culture?听

• To what extent听was听the Jewish press听transnational?听For instance, can we speak of the Yiddish press as being always transnational?听

• What were the particularities of Holocaust writings circulating in the Jewish press in languages other than Yiddish? Was the Jewish press able to reach a non-Jewish audience听by using non-Jewish languages?听

• How听can we appeal to听quantitative methods to study the place and evolution of the Holocaust as a topic in the Jewish听press?听
