David Joseph Wrisley, Toolkit or Toychest?: the Digital in the Classroom

University Room: David T. McGovern Grand Salon (C-104)
Friday, March 17, 2017 - 11:00 to 14:00

The Teaching & Learning Center invites 黑料正能量 faculty to a hands聽on session which will put into practice some of the ideas聽laid forth in Thursday鈥檚 lecture.聽It will look at some simple,聽off-the-shelf tools for digital tasks, and move on to more聽complex (or even combined) tasks that are useful for collecting,聽analyzing and disseminating research data. The session aims to聽make participants aware of some of the emergent categories of聽tools for research & pedagogy, as well as to discuss the degrees聽of openness that they embody.聽聽The session argues for the聽productive tension between the functional (the tool) and the聽ludic (the toy), suggesting that the digital does not simplify or聽merely quantify, but rather opens the door to critical play and聽reflection with tools.聽聽Participants will try out basic聽functionality of some of the following environments and will聽discuss together how they might be integrated into critical聽classroom praxis: Voyant, TypeWright, FromThePage, Prism,聽Hypothes.is, Google Fusion Tables, TopoText, Odyssey.js,聽Palladio, NodeGoat, Sketchup, JSTOR analyze, Zotero,聽WordPress.org.
