The fifth Stephen Sondheim musical to be听presented at Ch芒telet, this work is taken from听a book by a 19th century Italian writer telling听鈥渢he story of a man who falls in love with听an ugly woman, despite her ugliness, which听he cannot bear鈥� (Umberto Eco). Sondheim听looked for a balance between 鈥渢he familiar听theatricality of a musical and the extravagant听flamboyance of an opera,鈥� thus creating a听work which turns out to be a lyrical jewel.听Based on the film Passione d鈥橝more by听Ettore Scola (1981).
