AH2011 Ancient Art & Architecture
AR1020 Materials and Techniques of the Masters
Students from AH 2011 with Professor Russakoff focus on the grandiose heritage of ancient Rome, the Colosseum, the Pantheon, the Roman Forumand other sites. Visits are planned to the major museums, including the Capitoline Museums and the Vatican Museum. For Firstbridge students with Professor Shimony, this is a drawing and photograph expedition, conceived in the spirit of the French Prix de Rome winners who were sent to Rome to
inspire their architecture with a knowledge of the treasures in the Eternal City. This trip allows students to compare what was built in both cities and better understand the tremendous influence that Rome had on Paris throughout
the centuries. Depending on the weather, students work either inside in the Panthenon, the Capitoline Museum, and the Vatican; or outside, drawing the triumphal arches, the piazzas, the church facades (notably the Baroque
fa莽ade of Il Gesu) as well as the gardens and structures in Tivoli.
